Green Hills to Present at SDR Technical Conference

November 14, 2003

SANTA BARBARA, CA. November 12, 2003. Green Hills Software, Inc. (GHS) will offer a tutorial on Multilevel Secure Systems (MILS) at the Software Defined Radio (SDR) Technical Conference in Orlando, FL, November 17-19. The presentation by Green Hills Software's James Sorrells, veteran embedded product development engineer, will be built on the company's long-standing mission-critical expertise in SDR technology.

In the tutorial, Sorrells will cover the Software Communications Architecture (SCA) and the application of MILS to dramatically reduce system costs. The tutorial will cover the implications of embedded systems, real-time operating systems (RTOS), middleware/object request broker (ORBs), security, partitioning, memory management unit (MMU) and development tools.

A MILS operating system allows designers to manage secure and non-secure data on a single processor. This alternative has profound design implications for SDRs that presently rely on physically separating data on multiple processors. MILS can lower the number of CPUs, resulting in a reduction in cost, weight, power consumption and heat dissipation. Sorrells' talk will focus on how to take advantage of these design alternatives.

A conference sponsor, Green Hills will demo its INTEGRITY RTOS that is fully compliant with software communications architecture v2.2 POSIX standards. The INTEGRITY RTOS and accompanying MULTI Integrated Development Environment (IDE) are currently used for the US Army's Joint Tactical Radio Systems (JTRS) Cluster 1 SDR system.

The Cluster 1 radio will be deployed in Army rotary platforms, Army ground-based vehicles and Air Force tactical air control party ground vehicles. The INTEGRITY RTOS is also being used on the Air Force's new Family of Advanced Beyond Line-of-Sight Terminals (FAB-T) and is proposed for use in other upcoming SDR contracts.
