PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J., 21 Sept. 2005. U.S. Army officials are ordering additional AN/PSQ-18 M203 day/night sights from Insight Technology in Londonderry, N.H.
The AN/PSQ-18 is an enhanced fire-control system for the M203 40 mm grenade launcher. The system has a liquid crystal display that displays the distance to the target and an infrared IR pointer and illuminator for aiming at night while using night vision goggles.
Insight is doing the work under terms of a $7.6 million sole-source contract modification from the Army Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command at Picatinny Arsenal, N.J.
Army officials awarded a sole-source contract (W15QKN-04-C-1147) to Insight, they say, because the company is the only one able to fulfill the contract requirements.
The AN/PSQ-18 provides increased firing accuracy over the current quadrant-and-leaf sight systems for point and area targets from 35 to 400 meters away in daylight and at night. The system has better than 5-meter accuracy.
The system has indicators that show the correct cant of the weapon to enable the operator to hit targets with the first round, which is of critical importance for this system so the mission can be successful, Army officials say.
The AN/PSQ-18 uses one AA battery, is waterproof to 66 feet, has a mechanical range scale for firing without battery, 17.7 ounces, and has an optional safety block for force-on-force training that prevents the operator from accessing the non-eye safe modes of operation.
The sight does not diminish the rate of fire for the M203 grenade launcher at five to seven rounds per minute, Army officials say.
