Feds choose X-ray system to inspect parcels

BILLERICA, Mass., 6 Oct. 2005. American Science and Engineering, Inc. (AS&E) announced today the receipt of a $1.2 million order from the U.S. government for four Model 101ZZ parcel X-ray inspection systems. The order also includes installation, service and maintenance, and operator training.

"AS&E's combined Z Backscatter and transmission technologies make our parcel systems the most advanced X-ray inspection capable of finding a complete range of threats," said Anthony Fabiano, president and CEO. "The Model 101ZZ's ability to uncover both organic and inorganic threats is ideal for the U.S. government's anti-terrorism applications. We are pleased to work with U.S. officials to provide these technologies to ensure parcel security."

Parcel, mail, and baggage inspection systems offer varying tunnel sizes and configurations to fit various inspection environments. Compact X-ray units screen smaller items, including mail and briefcases; while larger, open-tunnel systems inspect oversized baggage and small cargo. These systems are primarily used in government facilities, airports, high-security federal facilities, commercial office buildings, and convention centers.

The Model 101ZZ is designed for clients who must inspect numerous large and small packages quickly and efficiently. One monitor displays Z Backscatter images from opposing sides; the other displays images from the transmission X-rays. This dual technology not only increases accuracy, but also speeds inspection.

American Science and Engineering, Inc. (AS&E) is the leading worldwide supplier of innovative X-ray inspection and screening systems. With more than 45 years of experience in developing advanced X-ray security systems, the company's product line utilizes a variety of technologies, including patented Z Backscatter, Shaped Energy and Radioactive Threat Detection (RTD). These technologies offer superior detection of threats including plastic explosives, plastic weapons, illegal drugs, other contraband, dirty bombs and nuclear devices.

AS&E offers a complete range of X-ray inspection products including Z Backscatter screening systems, CargoSearch, and ParcelSearch inspection systems, used for critical detection and security applications to combat terrorism, drug and weapon smuggling, trade fraud, and illegal immigration. AS&E customers include leading governmental agencies, border authorities, military bases, airports and corporations worldwide, including the U.S. departments of Homeland Security, Defense, and Customs and Border Protection, as well as the Royal Thai Police, HM Customs & Excise (U.K.) and Hong Kong Customs.
