Army asks industry to design magnetometer and electro-magnetic sensors to hunt buried mines

February 23, 2007

ALEXANDRIA, Va., 23 Feb. 2007. U.S. Army researchers are approaching industry about designing magnetometer and electro-magnetic sensors for detecting buried land mines.

Specifically, the Army is companies for mature technologies that simultaneously deploy commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) total field magnetometers and COTS time-domain pulsed induction sensors to detect and map mines and unexploded ordnance.

Issuing the request are officials of the Army Communications-Electronics Life Cycle Management Command (CE-LCMC) Acquisition Center-Washington in Alexandria, Va. Interested companies must respond with white papers by 23 March to be considered.

Army CE-LCMC officials are making industry inquiries about the magnetometer and electro-magnetic sensors on behalf of the Humanitarian Demining Team of the Army Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate at Fort Belvoir, Va. The federal solicitation number is W909MY-07-R-DSME.

Companies that wish to participate in the research effort also must show not only that they have research experience in combined total field magnetometer and electro-magnetic induction dual-mode sensor technology, but also experience with technologies related to unexploded ordnance disposal and countermine applications.

Army officials caution that they will not award a contract based on the responses receive. Instead, they will use the information to assess capable sources. They want all data they receive to belong to the government.

Send white papers by post to the U.S. Army C-E LCMC, Acquisition Center-Washington, ATTN: AMSEL-AC-W, 2461 Eisenhower Ave., Alexandria Va., 22331-0700.
