SUNNYVALE, Calif., 5 March 2008. The U.S. Air Force is looking to software middleware expert Real-Time Innovations (RTI) in Sunnyvale, Calif., to develop a data-distribution service (DDS) standards-based system to scan network nodes for security vulnerabilities.

This Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract from the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Information Directorate in Rome, N.Y., will blend active and passive network traffic sniffing, node security policy management, complex event processing (CEP), high-performance network data distribution, and data persistence, RTI officials say. A demonstration will be this summer.

This Proactive Determination of Networked Node Vulnerability project addresses the need for improved tools to seek out weaknesses in network security before and during a security intrusion. The aim is to automate vulnerability scanning of network nodes, analyze network vulnerabilities, and give the results to other network nodes.

The project will use mainstream commercial products, open-source technologies, and research by security partners. ObjectSecurity LLC in San Jose, Calif.; Promia Inc. in San Francisco; Coral8 Inc. in Mountain View, Calif.; ANTs Software Inc. in Burlingame, Calif.; and SL Corp. in Corte Madera, Calif.

ObjectSecurity and Promia provide network-intrusion detection and security management, Coral8, ANTs, and SL provide commercial CEP, database management, and real-time visualization, respectively. Several traditional prime defense contractors also will help test and validate results. The end result may integrate with the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) Global Information Grid (GIG).
