Wireless GPS and satellite weather for electronic flight bags

January 12, 2009

IRVINE, Calif., 12 Jan. 2009. Engineers at Flight Deck Resources (FDR) offer the SkyFi 2000 wireless serial adapter for electronic flight bags (EFB). The device is a serial (RS-422,232,485) to wireless (802.11) adapter that enables a wireless connection between a global positioning system (GPS) receiver and/or satellite weather receiver and any EFB equipped with 802.11 wireless connectivity.

This wireless GPS connection enables pilots to show own ship position on airport maps within their chosen charting application. The wireless data feed provided by the SkyFi 2000 can also be used to provide moving maps and satellite weather displays.

FDR's technology will assist pilots in their takeoffs and landings; reducing errors associated with taxi procedures; help pilots and crews gain familiarity with airports; provide overall increased situational awareness, etc., company officials say. Previously, multiple external devices would have to be connected to an EFB via cables in order to achieve this functionality. Now with the SkyFi 2000 pilots can gain the benefits of this new technology on a portable and wireless class 1 EFB.

"The SkyFi 2000 will be a great asset to corporate pilots looking to gain better situational awareness and more efficient route planning", says Corey Miller, vice president of engineering and chief technology officer for FDR. "Pilots will be able to realize all the benefits of FMS data and own ship positioning in conjunction with GPS and satellite weather data capability on their EFB's wirelessly."
