Dell Inc. is seeking to join the ranks of rugged computer makers like Panasonic, General Dynamics Itronix, and DRS Tactical Systems with its introduction of the Latitude E6400 XFR rugged laptop, with ballistic armor and protection from dust and moisture for military, homeland security, and first responder applications.

The harsh environment Latitude E6400 XFR rugged computers are for the military, first responders, oil and gas exploration, manufacturing floors, field technicians, and homeland security. The harsh environment computer can withstand powered-down drops from as high as four feet, and drops from as high as three feet with the rugged laptop running.

These military computers protect against dust and liquids with compression gaskets; are engineered and independently tested to MIL STD 810F; integrate into existing computing environments; use the Intel Core 2 Duo processors; use thermal management to withstand temperature extremes; and have extended field use batteries

This rugged military computer is 2.2 inches thick and weighs 8.5 pounds. It offers in-vehicle docking, a 12-cell rugged battery slice, legacy I/O adapter, and 14.1-inch-wide display that is viewable in direct sunlight
