Curtiss-Wright Flight Systems to supply transducers for military helicopter avionics

GASTONIA, N.C., 22 April 2009. The Curtiss-Wright Controls Inc. Flight Systems segment in Gastonia, N.C., is providing multi-channel linear variable displacement transducers (LVDTs) for the helicopter avionics fly-by-wire systems controlling the main rotor and tail rotor on the upgraded Sikorsky UH-60M and CH-53K military helicopters.

Curtiss-Wright is doing the work under contract to Claverham Ltd. in Claverham, England. The LVDTs are pressure sealed linear displacement transducers that are embedded in the primary flight control actuators manufactured by Claverham Ltd.

The transducers provide electrical signals that are proportional to the position of the hydraulic actuator rod. The actuators form part of the fly-by-wire control system, which changes the rotor pitch angles on the main and tail rotors in response to the pilot's commands during flight.

Claverham Ltd., which is a business unit of Hamilton Sundstrand Flight Systems in Windsor Locks, Conn., manufactures actuation systems and support for military, aerospace, and industrial applications.

Curtiss-Wright Controls is a supplier of linear displacement transducers, rotary displacement transducers, and solenoids for helicopters and fixed-wing commercial and defense aircraft.
