GE Fanuc offers single board computers based on Intel Atom processor

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., 8 April 2009. GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms in Charlottesville, Va., is introducing two single board computers based on the Intel Atom microprocessor for military embedded computing applications.

The bCOM2-L8000 COM Express module and the mITX-945S-ED motherboard are for embedded computers that provide PC functionality in commercial and military applications where low power consumption and minimal heat dissipation are key requirements, but where the system designer cannot compromise on I/O capability.

In addition to military and aerospace applications, these embedded computer modules are for medical, industrial control, security, imaging, digital signage, manufacturing, and gaming. Such applications are often battery powered, or rely on passive cooling.

At the heart of both products is the 1.6 GHz version of the Intel Atom processor, which was designed for simple, affordable mobile devices.

The bCOM2-L8000, which is a basic form factor, Type 2 pinout module, has a typical power envelope of only 10 to 12 Watts and provides an alternative to the bCOM2-L1000 COM Express module which has higher performance but at the cost of greater power dissipation.

Similarly, the mITX-945S-ED complements GE Fanuc's existing broad range of products based on the Mini-ITX form factor and the Intel Core2 Duo CPU (with which the Intel Atom processor is compatible), but provides an alternative combination of price/performance, I/O functionality and heat dissipation.
