SYRACUSE, N.Y., 16 April 2009. The Lockheed Martin Maritime Systems & Sensors segment in Syracuse, N.Y., won a $1.6 million contract from the Brazilian air force to support six TPS-77 long range air surveillance radar systems that systems that monitor air space in the Amazon region.

The TPS-77 ground radar stations have dual-use radar technology capability, providing defense radar air surveillance and air traffic control. Lockheed Martin will provide technical support for the six radar systems and on-the-job training for Brazilian radar technicians. The one-year contract includes options to extend the support for as long as five years.

The surveillance radar systems also supply information to the Amazon Protection System (SIPAM), a complex network of ground-based and airborne sensors providing surveillance in the region.

Since their installation between 2000 and 2005, the Lockheed Martin-manufactured radars have been part of the Brazilian integrated air traffic control and air defense system (SISDACTA).
