Aselsan chooses VPX embedded processor from GE Fanuc for Turkish military radar

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., 17 May 2009. Radar processing experts at Aselsan Inc. in Ankara, Turkey, needed embedded processor technology for a military radar system for the Turkish armed forces. They found their military embedded systems solution from GE Fanuc GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms in Charlottesville, Va.

GE Fanuc won a $1.1 million radar technology order from Aselsan for a rugged military signal processor subsystem to be included in a synthetic aperture defense radar system for the Turkish military.

The GE Fanuc embedded processing solution includes the GE Fanuc DSP230 VITA 46 VPXmultiprocessor computer and XMCV5 VPX standard military FPGA-based processor can process significant quantities of information in close to real-time in a harsh environment.

Availability of the DSP230 and XMCV5 enables Aselsan to begin prototyping, testing, and validating the solution immediately.

"The goal of VPX is to bring rugged defense computing into the era of serial switch fabric backplanes, while preserving many of the features which made VME successful," says Peter Cavill, general manager of military and aerospace products at GE Fanuc.

The GE Fanuc rugged 6U VPX DSP230 multiprocessor is based on four Freescale 8641D dual core processor nodes, and includes a Serial RapidIO switch and a Gen-2 PCI Express switch to all nodes.

A Gigabit Ethernet switch is also provided to all four nodes, as well as to the backplane and, in the case of air-cooled versions, to the front panel.
