Rugged FPGA for aerospace and military embedded systems introduced by Xilinx

June 2, 2009

SAN JOSE, Calif., 2 June 2009. Xilinx Inc. in San Jose, Calif., is introducing the Virtex-5Q family of field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) for aerospace and military embedded systems involving secure military communications, electronic warfare, aircraft avionics and vetronics, radar technology, missiles, munitions, as well as command, control, communications, computer, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C4ISR).

Xilinx this week also is partnering with LynuxWorks in San Jose, Calif., to demonstrate a space-partitioned, FAA-accepted reusable software component (RSC) that meets RTCA/DO-178B for safety critical systems software at the the Military & Aerospace Electronics Forum and the Avionics USA conference in San Diego, sponsored by the PennWell Aerospace and Defense Media Group.

The Virtex-5Q military FPGA provides single-chip cryptography (SCC) to speed development of secure communications embedded computer systems, and delivers the aerospace FPGA with ruggedized packaging and advanced cryptographic capabilities. The devices also are available in bare die form for customized form factors.

The 65-nanometer Virtex-5Q FPGA family delivers a scalable mix of performance up to 500 MHz, densities as large as 330,000 logic cells. Xilinx also is working with packaging, board and bare die suppliers, including Endicott Interconnect Technologies Inc. (EI), ISI/Nallatech, and Teledyne Microelectronics, to provide several form factor options.

SCC combines the functionality of several FPGAs into one device. The Virtex-5Q devices come with the embedded PowerPC 440 processor, tamper-proofing capabilities, and intellectual property (IP) block.
