DC-DC converter power supply for aerospace and battery power applications introduced by Murata

August 11, 2009

MANSFIELD, Mass., 11 Aug. 2009. Murata Power Solutions Inc. in Mansfield, Mass., is introducing the UWE-5/15-Q48N-C and the UWE-15/5-Q12P-C eighth-brick, 4:1 ultra-wide input isolated DC-DC converter power supply. Typical applications include aerospace power, military power, devices that run on battery power, and distributed power architectures in industrial, high reliability, networking, and telecommunications applications.

The UWE-5/15-Q48N-C power electronics device (15 amps at 5 volts DC) and the UWE-15/5-Q12P-C DC-DC converters (5 amps at 15 volts DC) provide as much as 75 Watts of output power, and are drop-in replacements for commonly used 100 Watt quarter-brick devices where the 100 Watts is power is not necessary.

The eighth-brick industry standard through-hole aerospace power supply package has overall dimensions of 0.9 by 0.36 inches. Operating temperature range is -40 to 85 degrees Celsius with derating. The UWE series has a synchronous rectifier design that results in typical efficiency ratings of 90 percent, plus low power dissipation with no reverse output conduction. This allows the DC-DC converters to be used without fans or temperature derating in most applications. For the most demanding environments, customers can specify an optional thermal mounting baseplate.

The UWE series provides 1500 volts DC isolation (basic insulation) to assure safety, and differential (floating) operation. All models include remote on/off control, trim, and remote sense functions to provide compensation for line drop errors at high output currents.

The self-protection design has including pre-bias operation, input undervoltage, and output short circuit, overcurrent and over temperature protection prevent potential damage to both the converter and outside circuits. Overloads automatically recover using the 'hiccup' technique on fault removal.
