Missile defense segment helps sharpen Lockheed Martin focus on missile and air defense

August 26, 2009

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., 26 Aug. 2009. Lockheed Martin (LMT) Space Systems Co. in Sunnyvale, Calif., is establishing a Missile Defense Systems operating unit based in Huntsville, Ala., to sharpen the company's focus on ballistic missile defense, missile and air defense battle management, and air defense systems.

The unit consists of the company's support of the U.S. Missile Defense Agency's Targets and Countermeasures Program; Battle Management Technology Center; and programs such as the tri-national Medium Extended Air Defense System (MEADS) and the Land Environment Air Picture Provision (LEAPP) air defense program.

Additionally, the unit is responsible for the pursuit of the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) Operations and Sustainment contract, for which Lockheed Martin will offer its capabilities in midcourse missile defense, strategic weapons system operations and sustainment, and performance-based logistics.

The unit, which is part of the company's Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Strategic and Missile Defense Systems line of business, includes program management, engineering and production facilities in Huntsville and Courtland, Ala., as well as program operations in Denver, Colo., and Sunnyvale, Calif.

Retired U.S. Army Maj. Gen. John W. Holly will lead the unit as vice president for Missile Defense Systems. Holly will be responsible for several important missile defense programs located in Northern Alabama. Holly joined Lockheed Martin in January 2008. He last served as vice president of Huntsville Operations for the company.

Prior to joining Lockheed Martin, Holly was president and managing director of Analytical Services Inc. (ASI). In the Army, Holly last served as deputy director for the Missile Defense Agency.
