September 21, 2009

SAN DIEGO, 21 Sept. 2009. U.S. Navy officials are awarding contracts to two RF power specialists to provide RF power amplifier technology for the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) AN/USC-61(C) Digital Modular Radio (DMR) military RF system.

Milpower Inc. in El Cajon, Calif., won a $17.7 million contract, while Elbit Systems of America C4I Solutions (formerly Talla-Com Industries Inc.) in Tallahassee, Fla., won an $11.4 million contract to provide power amplifiers for the DMR military radio system.

Digital Modular Radio is a compact, multi-channel standard software defined radio (SDR) that provides several radio communications waveforms and multi-level information security for voice and data communications.

Milpower will provide 100- and 200-Watt power amplifier, while Elbit will provide 100-Watt power amplifiers for the DMR system. The Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) is awarding the contracts on behalf of the Navy Program Executive Office for Command, Control, Communication, Computers and Intelligence Systems.

Digital Modular Radios operate aboard U.S. Navy surface warships, submarines, fixed-sites and on other DOD communication platforms over HF, VHF, UHF, and SATCOM channels using frequencies ranging from 2 MHz to 2 GHz.

DMR is also certified by the Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC) to be compliant with the U.S. government's MIL-STD-188-181B/182A/183A requirements for UHF SATCOM.

Milpower will do the work in El Cajon, Calif., and Elbit will do the work in Tallahassee, Fla. Two companies are to be finished by September 2014.
