NASA needs infrared sensor system for future JDEM space-based telescope

GREENBELT, Md., 25 Nov. 2009. Electro-optics experts at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., are getting ready to ask industry to build an infrared sensor system for the future Joint Dark Energy Mission (JDEM) near-infrared (NIR) space-based telescope project.

NASA Goddard scientists intend to issue a request for proposal (RFP NNG10294225R) to design an infrared detector module consisting of an infrared sensor chip, thermal isolation cable, and sensor cold electronics for the JDEM project.

JDEM is a joint NASA/U.S. Department of Energy program to build a space-based, medium aperture, wide field, optical telescope with near-infrared (NIR) imaging and spectroscopic instrumentation.

JDEM will survey the sky to measure the magnitude and redshift light spectrum change of Type Ia supernovae in several galaxies for Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) studies, and accurate shape parameters and photometric redshift measurements of galaxies for Weak Lensing (WL) studies.

NASA say they expect to build an engineering development unit (EDU) focal plane, and need detector modules to populate it. The goal is to assess their ability to build and align several close-packed sensor chips into a mosaic array, remove and replace sensor chips without disturbing neighboring sensor chips, and determine if the sensor chips can withstand the severe shock, vibration, and temperatures of space launch.
