EL SEGUNDO, Calif., 8 Dec. 2009. Avionics designers at L-3 Communications Vertex Aerospace in Madison, Miss., needed flight data acquisition technology for the U.S. Navy E-6B TACAMO strategic communications airborne command post. They found their solution from Teledyne Controls in El Segundo, Calif.

Teledyne won a $5 million subcontract from L3 Vertex to supply the flight data acquisition system, ground-based flight data monitoring tools, and flight training simulator crew debriefing station for the TACAMO aircraft, Teledyne officials announced today.

The E-6B TACAMO, which stands for "Take Charge and Move Out," is a modified Boeing 707 jetliner that operates as an airborne command post and communications center, that relays instructions from the National Command Authority to Navy ballistic missile submarines.

The Navy will use Teledyne's commercial-off-the-shelf systems to monitor the E-6B aircraft for a wide range of health issues, including airframe structural life expended, engine performance, avionics system fault reporting, and flight operations quality assurance (FOQA). The system also offers growth capability to incorporate future specialized prognostics and health monitoring data requirements.

Teledyne is providing an enhanced configuration of the company's standard commercial digital flight data acquisition unit (DFDAU), which is installed on almost 60 percent of the delivered Boeing 737NG, 757 and 767 airliners.
