Aviation Technology 2010 P1

  • July 23, 2010 -- Virgin Atlantic selects Rockwell Collins to provide avionics for its A330 order
FARNBOROUGH, England 23 July 2010. Virgin Atlantic selected Rockwell Collins to provide avionics equipment including a new released digital radio altimeter for Virgin's fleet of 10 A330-300 aircraft. Deliveries of the fleet of 10 aircraft are scheduled to begin in spring 2011. Virgin Atlantic will be the launch customer for Rockwell Collins new Digital Low Range Altimeter (DLRA) LRA-2100. The DLRA system uses digital signal processing to gauge the aircraft's height above terrain. This newly developed system provides improved accuracy, especially over challenging terrain and objects on approach. The smaller, lighter unit is a drop-in replacement for the LRA-900.
  • July 23, 2010 -- Pratt & Whitney Canada chooses Air Data to supply power solution
FARNBOROUGH, England, 23 July 2010. Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) selected avionics and power provider Air Data Inc, in Montreal to design, manufacture, and service aircraft engines powering business, general aviation, and regional aircraft and helicopters.
  • July 21, 2010 -- Aircraft sales remain brisk in second day of Farnborough: sales through Wednesday morning reach 600
FARNBOROUGH, England, 21 July 2010. Passenger aircraft sales remained brisk Tuesday on the second day of the Farnborough International Airshow, as firm sales and options through early Wednesday had reached about 600 commercial jets in a confirmation of the returning health of the commercial aviation industry. Sales on Tuesday and into the beginning of Wednesday tallied about 392 passenger aircraft, which added to Monday's sales of 212 passenger airliners, bringing the total sales at Farnborough through early Wednesday to more than 600.
  • July 21, 2010 -- Panoramic display avionics in F-35 Joint Strike Fighter ignites industry debate on the size of cockpit screens
FARNBOROUGH, England, 21 July 2010. The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter is setting new standards for combat aircraft avionics with its 8-by-20-inch panoramic cockpit display, which the company is showing this week at the Farnborough International Airshow in Farnborough, England. This large active-matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD) has the avionics industry talking about whether it's a good idea or not to place so much cockpit information on one display. Proponents of the F-35's Panoramic Display, designed by L-3 Display Systems in Alpharetta, Ga., point out its flexibility, intuitive touch-screen use, and its ability to present the F-35 Lightning II pilot with all the information he needs, quickly, and without overwhelming him with too much information. Detractors, however, contend that one big display in a military cockpit poses a single-point-of-failure risk, one that distritbuting several different displays throughout the cockpit, rather than relying on one big display, does not.
  • July 20, 2010 -- Avionics Upgrade on E-3 AWACS to be provide by Rockwell Collins
FARNBOROUGH, United Kingdom 20 July 2010. Boeing selected Rockwell Collins to provide an avionics upgrade solution for 33 U.S. Air Force E-3B/C and 17 NATO E-3A Airborne Warning And Control System (AWACS) aircraft. As part of the Diminishing Manufacturing Sources Replacement of Avionics for Global Operations and Navigation (DRAGON) program, the upgrades will allow these aircraft to meet current and future communication, navigation, surveillance/air traffic management (CNS/ATM) airspace requirements.
