July 20, 2010 -- Flying the black pizza box: a new flavor of small UAV
THE FARNBOROUGH BLOG, 20 July 2010. Think of an extra-large black pizza box. Now put twin tails on it, a couple of magnetic-detachable electric-powered tiltrotor propellers, and a six-inch hollow nose for half a pound of cameras and other sensor payloads. Give it a remote control and digital downlink that connects to a Windows or Linux PC, and you have the Skate unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) from Aurora Flight Sciences in Manassas, Va. -
December 31, 2010 -- DRS Technologies wins $30 million from Australian Department of Defence for Multi-spectral Surveillance Suite
PARSIPPANY, N.J., 31 Dec. 2010. DRS Technologies Inc.’s Sustainment Systems Inc. (SSI) business unit in St. Louis, Mo., won a $30 million contract from the Australian Department of Defence for the production of the DRS Multi-Spectral Surveillance Suite (MSSS) for the Australian Light Armored Vehicle--Surveillance variant (ASLAV-S). The contract calls for the production of these systems, including a system integration lab, spares, and associated logistics support. -
December 30, 2010 -- Raytheon wins $52 million to retrofit U.S. Navy radars
El SEGUNDO, Calif., 30 Dec. 2010. Raytheon Company won from Naval Air Systems Command a $52 million contract to produce APG-79 Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radars for F/A-18 Super Hornet tactical aircraft. AESA radars provide the U.S. Navy with advanced technology and enable aircrews to detect and identify targets beyond the reach of most missiles. This long-range capability provides more time to process, share, and assess information before critical decisions are made. -
December 29, 2010 -- AeroVironment wins $46.2 million order for Raven unmanned aircraft systems and digital retrofit kits
MONROVIA, Calif., 29 Dec. 2010. AeroVironment Inc. (AV) won a $46,226,984 order under an existing contract with the U.S. Army. The order comprises 123 new digital Raven small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and initial spares packages, as well as 186 digital retrofit kits for the U.S. Marine Corps. The order also includes 339 digital retrofit kits for the U.S. Army. -
December 28, 2010 -- Orbit International Corp. gains $800,000 order for CVN 78 Super Carrier displays
HAUPPAUGE, N.Y., 28 Dec. 2010. Orbit International Corp., an electronics manufacturer and software solution provider, won an order for roughly $800,000 to deliver displays to a defense contractor for use in the Machine Control System for the U.S. Navy’s CVN 78 class of super aircraft carriers. This order, combined with approximately $1,300,000 of aggregate orders received earlier this year, brings total awards for this program to approximately $2.1 million in 2010. Production is underway at the company’s Orbit Instrument Division facility in Hauppauge, N.Y.
