  • March 29, 2011 -- Persistent surveillance on a non-satellite budget is goal of U.S. military airship development
Special report -- Whether tethered to the ground or floating for months and weeks at a time, manned and unmanned lighter-than-air vehicles packed with large electro-optic payloads are a key weapon in the U.S. military’s surveillance arsenal. Going back as far as the American Civil War, lighter-than-air vehicles -- airships, hot air balloons, and aerostats -- have performed a variety of missions for the military.
  • May 2, 2011 -- Critical needs for enhanced situational awareness drive avionics display development
Product Intelligence, 2 May 2011. Avionics display designers say the increased situational awareness data available to pilots is driving avionics display configurations while avionics designers are calling for smaller display designs in military and commercial avionics retrofit programs. Massive amounts of information available in the cockpit also have an influence on display design. Military users want more processing capability so they can stream live video in on the displays and display FLIR imaging, and have processing capability to meet future requirements.
  • May 17, 2011 -- Radiation-hardened electronics designers face increasing difficulty with shrinking chip geometries
Technology Focus, 17 May 2011. Integrated circuits continue to shrink in size and weight to enhance performance, yet today's tiny chip geometries can make life difficult for IC designers and systems integrators who must design systems to operate in the presence of naturally ocurring or man-made radiation. Some chip manufacturers are giving up levels of radiation hardness to enhance performance benefits in benign non-radiation applications.
  • May 24, 2011 -- Creeping system complexity drives growing use of EDA tools for aerospace and defense electronics
Product intelligence -- The aerospace and defense industry uses electronic design automation (EDA) tools pervasively to design electronic components, explains Todd Cutler, senior manager of planning, marketing, and services at Agilent EEsof EDA in Santa Clara, Calif.
  • May 27, 2011 -- Tactical laser weapons technology demonstrates its readiness for deployment
Special report -- The latest generations of laser weapons research seek to move beyond gigantic platforms like the Boeing 747 jumbo jet, and create deployable weapons that could be reliably mounted to small ships, fighter aircraft, armored combat vehicles, and even unmanned vehicles. The most important aspects of these future generations of laser weapons are size, weight, and power. They must be sufficiently small and efficient enough to fit on relatively small vehicles, while the most advanced laser weapon prototypes today must be housed on platforms as large as a modified Boeing 747.
