CHELMSFORD, Mass. 7 Jan. 2011. Mercury Computer Systems Inc. in Chelmsford, Mass., is introducing the Ensemble series 6U OpenVPX LDS6521 and 3U OpenVPX SBC3510 embedded computing modules based on the 2nd generation Intel Core processor family. Mercury’s single-board computers are for demanding aerospace and defense applications, such as intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) sensor processing.

The 6U OpenVPX LDS6521 CPU board from Mercury (NASDAQ: MRCY) uses the Intel Core i7-2715QE processor that doubles the number of cores available on one device over the previous generation and supports four cores. Each of these cores includes the Intel Advanced Vector Extensions (Intel AVX) instruction set with only a minimal increase in power consumption.

Together, these provide peak floating point computations per slot while maintaining appropriate size, weight, and power (SWaP) in military applications such as command and control (C2) for ground-mobile vehicles, tactical unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), as well as electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) sensors and electronic warfare (EW).

Additionally, ISR subsystems using several Mercury LDS6521 CPU boards benefit from Mercury’s Protocol Offload Engine Technology (POET), enabling fast and low-latency data communications among Intel Core processor-based computer boards as system size scales up.

Mercury’s 3U OpenVPX SBC3510, meanwhile, uses the dual core Intel Core i7-2655LE processor, an industry-standard XMC daughter card site, and diverse I/O. Mercury’s LDS6521 and SBC3510 are available in air- and conduction-cooled rugged versions. The LDS6521 supports two XMC mezzanine sites, an Intel Core i7-2715QE processor, and support via POET for serial RapidIO Gen 1 and Gen 2 or low latency 10 Gigabit Ethernet to the backplane/dataplane.
