DRS Sonar Systems beefs-up undersea warfare technology expertise with acquisition of Advanced Acoustic Concepts

GAITHERSBURG, Md., 11 Jan. 2011. DRS Sonar Systems LLC in Gaithersburg, Md., is improving its expertise in undersea warfare technology with its acquisition of Advanced Acoustic Concepts Inc. (AAC) in Hauppauge, N.Y. AAC specializes in sonar systems, sonar signal processing, acoustic training systems, and open-architecture systems and software.

The combined company will be Advanced Acoustic Concepts LLC, a DRS/Thales Company. "AAC has deep domestic acoustic signal processing, system development, and system integration expertise, and a demonstrated track record of providing value open-architecture solutions to the U.S. Navy,” says Richard Danforth, president and chief executive officer of DRS Defense Solutions.

“Bringing Advanced Acoustic Concepts into the joint venture will enable us to focus on emerging areas in the undersea warfare domain,” says Allan Cameron, President and chief executive officer of Thales USA. “We expect Advanced Acoustic Concepts to be a formidable competitor in the U.S. undersea warfare market.”

DRS Sonar Systems is a joint venture of DRS Defense Solutions LLC in Bethesda, Md., and Thales Group in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, near Paris, which specializes in aerospace, space, defense, and security technologies.
