Chassis-monitoring board for VPX and VME embedded computing systems introduced by Kontron



ECHING, Germany, 13 Sept. 2011. Kontron in Eching, Germany, is introducing the CMB chassis-monitoring board to help VPX and VME embedded computing systems designers streamline system monitoring and management of rugged military computing applications. The Kontron CMB helps systems integrators centralize their monitoring and management of out-of-band installed boards, as well as temperature, airflow, power supply, and other relevant system parameters.

The CMB system is for mission-critical commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) systems with demands for reliability, availability, and ruggedness. The CMB already is deployed in a VME chassis in a satellite navigation system, Kontron officials say.

The Kontron CMB works in a wide range of environments from ground benign conditions to extremely demanding helicopter applications. It requires one Watt of power. Systems designers can use the chassis monitoring board to monitor and control as many as eight power modules, eight temperature sensors, and eight fans in addition to out-of-band monitoring and management of as many as eight installed VME or VPX boards.

Systems designers also can use the CMB to turn on, turn off, and reset boards, fans and power supplies remotely, which enables additional functionality such as variable computing capacity to allow minimal power consumption while the system operates in surveillance mode, switching to maximum computing capacity in activity mode, Kontron officials say.

The Kontron CMB has an integrated microcontroller to run a multi-threaded monitoring application on the Freescale MQX real-time operating system. The multi-thread approach of the monitoring software enables response times and boot time of less than a second. The Kontron CMB also performs self-tests to check components and safeguard the correct monitoring functionality.
