Engineers at Cross Match Technologies Inc. in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., needed an embedded computing module with which to ramp up production of a handheld device for homeland security and defense. They found their solution from Eurotech, a supplier of embedded technologies, products, and systems. Cross Match officials issued a $1.5 million purchase order for the Eurotech Catalyst TC module, based on the Intel Atom processor E6xx series. Eurotech will deliver the Catalyst TC modules over the next 12 months.

The Catalyst TC is an integrated and flexible embedded module offering multiple communications, I/O, and multimedia capabilities with low power consumption in a small footprint.

"In the past few months, we have seen increased demand for our security and defense devices as customers recognize their value in capturing and verifying valuable data in the field," says Dan Troutman, Cross Match Technologies senior vice president of engineering. "We chose the Eurotech Catalyst TC due to its low-power embedded module that offers communications support and built-in wireless networking capability required in our handheld device."

The Cross Match homeland security and defense solution offers optional 3G communications support and built-in wireless networking capability, enabling field personnel to access remote databases as part of a biometric identity solution.

"The Catalyst TC is a high-performance module that supports ruggedized applications as it performs intensive computing functions, quickly and reliably in the field," explains Greg Nicoloso, CEO of Eurotech in North America. "Using the Eurotech computer gives customers a path to develop high-performance products now and in the future, built on this flexible embedded module technology."
