DARPA to brief industry 23 Feb. on plan to develop long-range 3D imaging technology

ARLINGTON, Va., 12 Feb. 2012. Military electro-optics scientists at the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in Arlington, Va., will brief industry on a project to develop fundamentally new avionics and vetronics electro-optic sensors for target identification and tracking from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on 23 Feb. 2012 at a corporate site in Arlington, Va.

The DARPA industry-day briefings are for the Military Imaging and Surveillance Technology - Long Range (MIST-LR) program (DARPA-BAA-12-22), which will focus on long-range geometric and 3-D imaging technology for characterizing targets beyond the physical-aperture diffraction-limit of the receiver system.

Briefings will be at Schafer Corp. at 3811 North Fairfax Dr., Suite 300, in Arlington, Va. Briefings will provide information on the MIST program, promote discussion, take questions, and give companies a chance to present their capabilities.

The DARPA MIST-LR program seeks to develop new sensor methods and techniques based on computational imaging, synthetic-aperture imaging, digital holography, multi-static laser radar, and angle-resolved imaging based on light transport analysis.

Today's optical sensors can help identify targets, but their sizes and operational ranges can be limiting, DARPA officials say. The MIST-LR program seeks to develop new sensing methods that address physical aperture of the imaging receiver, the effects of atmospheric turbulence, performance of the receiver array, the power of the illumination source, and the image formation algorithms are the primary defining characteristics of active imaging systems.

Register for the MIST-LR industry day by 20 Feb. by email to BAA-12-22@darpa.mil with the subject line "Proposers' Day Workshop Registration." The briefings are free of charge, but those attending must have secret clearances. There is room only for 60 people to attend.

When registering include full name, company name, company mailing address, e-mail, phone, fax-, and a brief statement that details the organization's expertise and experience in long-range imaging systems.
