TSA to brief industry on applying new X-ray research to baggage screening at airport security checkpoints

ARLINGTON, Va., 16 March 2012. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will brief industry 12 April 2012 on plans to apply recently developed X-ray technology to detecting home-made explosives at airport security checkpoints. Industry briefings will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the U.S. Transportation Security Administration Systems Integration Facility (TSA-TSIF) at Reagan Washington National Airport in Arlington, Va.

Sponsoring the industry day briefings is the DHS Science and Technology Directorate. Company representatives do not need security clearances to attend the meetings.

The industry day will outline recent results of X-ray explosives-detection research and how it might be applied to passenger baggage screening equipment at the nation's airports. DHS officials also will discuss the agency's strategy for enhancing explosives detection in checked baggage and checkpoint screening systems.

DHS has conducted research to identify non-attenuation-based signatures that are different from those used in conventional X-ray computed tomography and multi-view dual-energy projection systems. Industry day attendees will get overviews of hardware and software algorithms developed in this research, as well as of DHS plans to put it into practice for airport security.

Companies interested should e-mail requests to attend to the DHS's Duane Schatz at duane.schatz@dhs.gov, with a copy to myron.waddell@hq.dhs.gov. Include company, names of those attending, their titles, organizational roles, dates of birth, and social security numbers. Attendance will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Those attending should arrive early to clear TSA-TSIF security and obtain temporary entry badges. The TSIF facility is at 3701 West Post Office Road, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Arlington, Va. 22202.

For questions or concerns contact the Duane Schatz by phone at 202-254-2417, or by e-mail at duane.schatz@dhs.gov.
