Rugged steel power connectors that resist flames and explosions introduced by Amphenol

SIDNEY, N.Y., 23 Oct., 2012. Amphenol Industrial Global Operations in Sidney, N.Y., is introducing the Starline EX and Amphe-EX series of rugged connectors for use in the mining industry and similar hazardous areas in harsh environments.

Designed for hazardous ATEX and IECEx applications requiring high power or high-speed signal, these rugged connectors are available in 316 stainless steel. They are threaded, flameproof and fabricated to prevent the mixture of explosive gases and the electrical circuits by means of tighter tolerances in mated junctions.

Amphenol's Starline EX and Amphe-EX meet hazardous area classifications for American and Canadian EX ratings as well as those in Brazil and Australia.

All of the connectors in the Starline EX and Amphe-EX series go through vigorous testing to meet third-party approvals for conditions including flammability resistance, temperature resistance, temperature rise, and hydrostatic pressure testing.

The connectors resist corrosion resistance in some of the harshest environments in communications systems, surface and underground machinery, crushing and screening equipment, drilling equipment, and asset locator equipment.

The connectors work with copper, coax, fiber optics, Ethernet, and hybrid configurations.

Starline EX and Amphe-EX also are for petrochemical refining, oil and gas exploration and production, as well as pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturing. Instrumentation and power supply OEMs looking for various interconnect options also can use the connector series.

The Starline EX and Amphe-EX connectors are rated to the current AEx (American EX listing per the NEC 505), Canadian EX, ATEX, IECEx, Inmetro, GoST-R and Australian Group/Mining (through TUV Rheinland). The standard Starline connector series is approved to the UL 1977 and CSA C22.2 standards for circular connectors. The connectors also carry gas and dust certifications.

Amphenol also offers hazardous area cable glands that carry many of the same approvals as the connector series including ATEX, IECEx, Inmetro, UL and GoST-R and can be used in the mining industry as well.

Approved for Zone 1 rated applications, the Starline EX and Amphe-EX connectors eliminate hard wiring to terminal blocks enclosed in junction boxes and provide quick and safe interconnections to modular equipment.
