A flurry of aviation and aerospace activity taking place in the Southeastern United States. Executive Editor Courtney E. Howard has attended myriad aviation, aerospace, and embedded technology conferences and exhibitions in Florida, but largely in the areas of Orlando, Tampa, and the area commonly referred to as Florida’s Space Coast, at the heart of which sits the Kennedy Space Center.

In November, Howard took herfirst trip to Florida’s Great Northwest, the northwestern part of Florida, also informally called the Florida Panhandle.

Northwest Florida includes the Tallahassee, Panama City, Fort Walton Beach, and Pensacola metropolitan statistical areas. More than 500 aviation, aerospace, and defense companies call Northwest Florida home. A majority of companies are involved in engineering, testing, industrial design, and research & development; air transportation and support activities; information technology, systems integration, and network solutions; as well as computer and electronic equipment manufacturing, flight and aviation-related training, and aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO).

Florida’s Great Northwest is also home to several aviation-related military installations, including: Eglin Air Force Base, Hurlburt Field, Tyndall Air Force Base, Pensacola Naval Air Station, and Whiting Field.

At avionics-intelligence.com, Howard will be posting several articles about the aviation and aerospace innovators with whom I met during this trip. This week, she is delivering flight training and simulation news and insights directly from the floor of the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) in Orlando.
