ARLINGTON, Va., 21 Feb. 2013. DRS Technologies Inc. in Arlington, Va., is joining hands with Cypress Semiconductor Corp. in San Jose, Calif., to mass-produce uncooled infrared detectors for a wide variety of commercial and military electro-optical sensors.
Company executives announced that DRS will transfer its state-of-the-art microbolometer technology for uncooled infrared detectors to Cypress for high-volume manufacturing.
The proprietary production process, developed by the DRS Network and Imaging Systems (NIS) division of DRS Technologies, will transfer to the Cypress 65-nanometer class 10 eight-inch wafer fabrication facility in Bloomington, Minn.
The exclusive agreement will enable DRS Technologies to improve sensor production by using the Cypress advanced manufacturing processes for reduced wafer costs, company officials say.
The agreement will capitalize on Cypress advanced process technology and transfer expertise and the company's trusted fab accreditation and quality certifications for TS16949 and ISO14001.
DRS and Cypress officials say they expect to have qualified product by early 2014.
Cypress manufactures high-performance, mixed-signal, programmable technologies. DRS specializes in infrared solutions for military and commercial applications.
