GENEVA, Switzerland, 21 March 2013. Creative Electronic Systems SA (CES) in Geneva, Switzerland, is introducing the RIO6-8096 6U VME64x single-board computer for technology insertion into airborne applications and military embedded systems requiring conduction-cooled equipment.

The RIO6-8096 features the single-core Freescale QorIQ P2010 or dual-core P2020 microprocessor, with an optional user-programmable Xilinx Spartan-6 field-programmable gate array (FPGA). The RIO6-8096 provides a PCI Express x4 link over the standard VME P-zero connector on any existing VME64x backplane.

The embedded computing board "brings the performance of modern processors and interconnects into traditional VME systems without the need to replace the backplane and other legacy equipment," says CES CEO Hervé Garchette.

The RIO6-8096 introduces support for a PCI Express x4 connection over any traditional VME64x backplane that is fitted with VME-P-zero connectors.

The innovative onboard VME-P-zero connector allows PCI Express links through the traditional VME-P-zero backplane connectors, enabling the insertion of new technology without the need to replace the enclosures and backplanes, company officials say.

This PCI Express over VME-P-zero connection enables the connection of an ISC-8422 intelligent carrier to the RIO6, providing two additional PMC/XMC sites linked to the same computer board. It also enables a high-throughput PCI Express x4 connection between two RIO6-8096 boards in addition to the VMEbus.

The RIO6-8096 has as much as 4 gigabytes of high-speed DDR3 SDRAM with ECC protection and 2 gigabytes of onboard Flash. Onboard features and interconnects include 12 port PCI Express Gen2 switch, CES FlexIO static routing module, PCI Express x4 on VME-P-zero, PCI Express x4 to XMC, three 10/100Base-Tx/1000Base-T ports on VME-P2, and USB 2.0 on VME-P2. Various rear transition modules (RTMs) are available to access the wide range of I/O and debug signals.

The RIO6-8096 is delivered with the classic CES PPCMon bootloader and monitor application, and an extended board support package (BSP) for Linux, VxWorks, or Integrity. Enablement tools and software are available from Freescale and third parties.
