YORBA LINDA, Calif., 29 March 2013. U.S. Navy officials have given an official nomenclature to the Shipboard Peripheral Replacement System (SPRS) from Sabtech Industries in Yorba Linda, Calif., which declares the device unique from systems in the existing U.S. inventory.
The Navy now refers to the Sabtech SPRS rugged data storage system as the OJ-839(V)/U, which is replacing existing legacy peripherals for the Shipboard Gridlock System (SGS), Gun Weapon System (GWS) and Vertical Launching System (VLS) as part of the Navy's Aegis midlife extension program.
The Navy will supervise installation of Sabtech's SPRS 22 Arleigh Burke-class Aegis guided missile destroyers over the next five years, Sabtech officials say.
The Sabtech OJ-839(V)/U replaces old data storage equipment that is difficult and expensive to maintain. It combines modern off-the-shelf technology with a mechanical design that will stand up to the harsh operating conditions of Navy surface warships.
"Our open-architecture-based SPRS provides 1,000 times more data capture capability than legacy systems using obsolete disks, tapes and displays," explains Sabtech CEO Michael Carter.
The SPRS has an intuitive graphical user interface and operates exactly like the peripheral devices it replaces, Sabtech officials say. No program changes are required on the host computer.
The Sabtech SPRS OJ-839(V)/U adds capabilities not possible with the original equipment such as networking, remote control, and increased storage capacity.
The rugged shipboard data storage system is configured with military connectors that mate with existing cables. Conversion of existing media to SPRS is done using either standard Navy utility programs or with Sabtech's tape conversion utility.
