WASHINGTON, 5 April 2013. U.S. Navy researchers needed 3U VPXembedded computing systems to support a variety of research programs and system prototyping for space and maritime military applications. They found their solution from 4DSP LLC in Austin, Texas.

Officials of the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington announced a contract award Tuesday to 4DSP for five VP680 Virtex 6 3U VPX single-board computers; two FMC126 FMC HPC analog-to-digital converter boards; two FMC210 FMC HPC digital to analog converter boards; three VPB601 two-slot 3U backplanes; and three VPB603 three-slot 3U backplanes. The contract is for $86,725.

NRL is the corporate research laboratory for the Navy and Marine Corps, and conducts scientific research, technology, and advanced development for maritime applications of materials, techniques, equipment, systems and ocean, atmospheric, and space sciences and related technologies.

NRL scientists will use the 4DSP embedded computing equipment in developing prototype systems applicable to specific projects; conducting space technology and space systems development; mapping, charting, and, geodesy research; and other basic research for anticipated Navy and Marine Corps needs.

The 4DSP VP680 is a high performance 3U VPX computer card based on the Xilinx Virtex-6 field-programmable gate array (FPGA) for advanced digital signal processing that requires complex FPGA algorithms.

The 4DSP FMC126 is a high-performance-computing quad-channel analog-to-digital (A/D) converter board based on the FPGA mezzanine card (FMC) form factor. The card provides four 10-bit A/D converter channels that enable simultaneous sampling of 4, 2, or 1 channel with a maximum sample rate of 1.25 gigabits per second.

The 4DSP FMC210 FMC is a single channel digital-to-analog (D/A) FMC providing 10-bit D/A conversion at a maximum rate of 8 gigasamples per second. The card has a high-pin count (HPC) connector and can be used in convection- and conduction-cooled environments. The FMC210 card comes with power supply and temperature monitoring.
