FPGA-based 6U computer board for digital signal processing introduced by Curtiss-Wright

Posted by John Keller

ASHBURN, Va., 1 July 2013. Curtiss-Wright Controls Defense Solutions in Ashburn, Va., is introducing the CHAMP-FX4 commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) 6U field-programmable gate array (FPGA) engine for demanding applications like radar processing, signal intelligence (SIGINT), ISR, image processing, network processing and electronic warfare (EW).

The rugged OpenVPX (VITA 65) embedded computing board has triple on-board Xilinx Virtex-7 FPGAs in one chassis slot, and offers processing throughput of more than 100 gigabytes per second for memory bandwidth and backplane I/O bandwidth.

The CHAMP-FX4 has three Xilinx Virtex-7 FPGAs in an FFG1761 package, using the -2 speed grade version of the FPGA. Two of the FPGAs serve as I/O FPGAs and are connected to FMC (VITA 57) mezzanine sites as well as to the backplane SERDES. The third Virtex-7 device is the board's aggregator FPGA and is connected to the backplane expansion plane.

The CHAMP-FX4 supports the Zynq-7000 All Programmable SoC from Xilinx which includes an embedded dual-core ARM Cortex A9 processor. Rear panel I/O and memory includes an SRIO-based switching fabric, 16 high-speed serial links per FPGA, and 20 pairs of LVDS links to the backplane that can be used to support high-speed parallel interface such as Camera Link.

With support for data bandwidth rated to 10.3 gigabits per second via its high-speed serial links, the CHAMP-FX4 also offers software support that includes Curtiss-Wright's FXTools BSP and FPGA design kit which includes optimized IP blocks, development environment, reference designs, scriptable simulation test benches and software libraries. Operating environments supported include VxWorks and Linux.

It comes in commercial, air-cooled rugged, and conduction-cooled versions, and is scheduled to ship in October. For more information contact Curtiss-Wright online at
