WASHINGTON, 29 July 2013. U.S. government researchers will conduct a two-hour webinar on 13 Aug. 2013 outlining strategies and enabling technologies for U.S. border protection. The webinar, from 2 to 4 p.m. eastern time is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in Washington.

The webinar, intended for technical representatives of industry, academia, and federal laboratories will discuss the strategies and needed technologies for the DHS Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Office of Border Patrol (OBP). The sponsor is the DHS Homeland Security Advanced Research Projects Agency (HSARPA).

Topics will include enabling technologies to detect and prevent illegal surface traffic between ports of entry; illegal subterranean border crossings; objects dropped or delivered illegally from aircraft; and illegal border crossings via inland waterways.

The webinar also will cover situational awareness in lightly patrolled or remote areas; improved in-processing at stations and checkpoints; strategic and tactical decision-making; and cost reduction through improvements to forward operating bases and patrol vehicles.

HSARPA pushes scientific limits and produces front-line products that support organizations like the Secret Service, Transportation Security Administration and Border Patrol, as well as the first responder community.

The webinar will provide overviews of the Office of Border Protection's mission needs, current HSARPA programs aligned to their priorities, upcoming opportunities for research and development, and mechanisms for public-private partnership.

The anticipated Federal government presenters will be Paul Benda, director of HSARPA and Ronald Vitiello, deputy chief of CBP. The webinar will be recorded and available after the event. There is no registration fee.
