LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., 10 Jan. 2014. Tadiran Batteries in Lake Success, N.Y., is introducing the TLI series line of long-life rechargeable lithium-ion batteries for applications in harsh environments that require high survivability.

The batteries are suitable for military and aerospace applications such as remote wireless sensors; battery-operated devices including night vision systems, emergency locators, and GPS tracking devices; portable MIL-grade computers; and communication systems that must operate reliably even when exposed to extreme temperatures.

The TLI series batteries use technology found in Tadiran's patented hybrid layer capacitor (HLC), which stores the high current pulses required for two-way wireless communications.

HLC technology has been field-proven in millions of cells to deliver more than 25 years of service life, Tadiran officials say. TLI series batteries modify this technology to deliver reliable, long-term performance under extreme environmental conditions.

Standard rechargeable lithium-ion cells have inherent drawbacks, including five-year operating life, 1,000 maximum cycle life, as much as 60 percent annual self discharge, and an inability to recharge at low and high temperatures.

TLI series batteries operate in temperatures from -40 to 85 degrees Celsius, with storage to 90 C; ability to deliver high current pulses (to 5A for AA cell); self-discharge rate of less than 5 percent; as many as 5,000 life cycles; 20-year operating life; and charging at extreme temperatures.

TLI series cells can be recharged using DC power or can be used with photovoltaic solar systems or other energy harvesting devices. TLI series batteries are available in AA and AAA diameters, as well as custom battery packs.
