WASHINGTON, 28 April 2015. U.S. Navy shipboard electronics experts are looking to the DRS Laurel Technologies segment of DRS Technologies Inc. in Johnstown, Pa., to provide common military displays for surface warships.

Officials of the Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington announced a $15.5 million contract to DRS Laurel Friday for the Common Display System (CDS) Technology Insertion 12 production. This contract includes options could bring its cumulative value to $96.3 million.

The CDS is a family of enterprise display systems for Navy surface ships, and has the potential for use with the U.S. Marine Corps, as well as with allied navies.

Navy experts initially developed the CDS to support the DDG 1000 Zumwalt-class surface-attack destroyer, as well as Aegis modernization aboard the Navy's Ticonderoga-class cruisers and Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.

Navy electronics experts, however, have expanded the requirement for CDS to Navy aircraft carriers, amphibious assault ships, and dock landing ships. Navy leaders also are considering the CDS for Navy aircraft and submarines.

“The Common Display System program will enhance situational awareness for sailors,” says Patrick Marion, vice president and general manager of DRS Laurel Technologies. DRS Technologies is a wholly owned subsidiary of Finmeccanica S.p.A.

DRS Laurel will do the work in Johnstown, Pa., and should be finished by April 2016. For more information contact DRS Technologies online at www.drs.com, or Naval Sea Systems Command at www.navsea.navy.mil.
