PARIS, 16 June 2015. Radar experts at the Thales Group in Paris are introducing the next-generation STAR NG air traffic control (ATC) radar for military and commercial applications. Thales made the announcement this week at the Paris Air Show in Paris.

The radar includes a host of new technologies including dual civil and military capabilities, which makes the RF surveillance system the most advanced and efficient radar surveillance system in the world, Thales officials claim.

STAR NG is an S-band primary surveillance radar for civil and military air traffic control. The system uses digital signal processing to provide increased mitigation of the notorious RF interference from electricity-generating wind farms, Thales officials say. The STAR NG radar also drastically can reduce electronic interference from 4G cell phone networks, company officials say.

STAR NG is suited to military civilian applications because it can detect slow- and fast-moving targets such as helicopters and jet fighters as well as very small targets such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). It has anti-jam capabilities and can provide altimetry information.

The radar system uses advanced materials in its construction, and is energy-efficient, which can ease its ability to adapt to many different environments, and reduce maintenance and operation costs, Thales officials say.
