VANCOUVER, Wash., 13 Nov. 2015. Worldwide demand for heads-up display (HUD) technologies will reach $9.02 billion after growing at a combined annual growth rate of 26.23 percent between now and 2020, predict analysts at market researcher MarketsandMarkets in Vancouver, Wash.

Depth-fused 3D is an emerging HUD technology, analysts say in their latest market research. This technology contains two focal planes and lens systems which identify depth by changing the luminance ratio between the images.

The electrically adjustable liquid lenses can combines the front and rear focal planes with the corresponding images. These lenses allow for the projection of multiple images in different viewing distances, which represent the 3D image content. This technology is expected to drive the automotive industry in the future.

MarketsandMarkets analysts make their predictions in the report "Head-Up Display Market -- Global Forecast to 2020," which breaks up the market by component, application, and geography.

HUD components comprise video generator, projector, software, combiner, and others; application comprises military and civil aviation, premium/luxury cars, sports cars, and mid-segment cars; and geography comprises North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and rest of the world.

HUD technology is an important function of aviation and automotive applications, and augmented reality is an emerging trend in this market, analysts say. Augmented reality HUD technology also provides color advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) functions including visual warning and lane-departure warning.

Other driving assistance from HUD technology includes vehicle speed, navigation system, road direction, fuel indication, distance between the vehicles, vehicle warning message, and other information to the driver.

Currently, automotive application leads the overall HUD market, with the greatest growth in the luxury, premium, and sport segment cars. Now the head-up display manufacturing companies are focusing on the mid-segment cars because of low costs.
