WASHINGTON, 31 Oct. 2016. Avionics experts at the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in Washington have granted FAA approval for installing an airborne Internet router from Kontron SA in Augsburg, Germany, aboard several kinds of passenger jets.

The FAA has granted a Parts Manufacturer Approval (PMA) Supplement to the Kontron Cab-n-Connect A100 cabin wireless access point (CWAP) for several passenger jets, including the Boeing 737-700, 737-800, 767-200, 767-300, Airbus A330-300, A320-200, and Embraer ERJ 190-100.

The FAA Parts Manufacturer Approval clears Kontron to produce and sell these articles for installation on specified aircraft. It certifies the Cab-n-Connect’s use on aircraft and streamlines their deployment in commercial aircraft installations worldwide, Kontron officials say.

The Cab-n-Connect A100 delivers HD streaming video to passengers on densely packed passenger aircraft. It 802.11ac technology for high data throughput compared to 802.11n-based equipment.

Kontron's integrated antenna reduces the data router's size and installation complexity by using technologies such as 3X3 Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO). The router supports 3-spatial streams of data that can be sent simultaneously to one client device to improve bandwidth.

Additional enhancements in beamforming enable an efficient path for data transmission between an access point and a client device such as laptop computer, tablet computer, or smart phone. The client device and access point work together to provide an optimized communication path for stronger and faster data transmission.

To protect against network attacks, the Kontron Cab-n-Connect A100 wireless security based on the WiNG 5 software and Air Defense, which provides a distributed architecture that extends quality of service, security, and mobility services for passengers and other users aboard the aircraft.
