SAN DIEGO, 19 Oct. 2016. U.S. Navy U.S. Navy researchers needed embedded computing services routers for command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) research work. They found their solution from Extreme Engineering Solutions (X-ES) in Middleton, Wis.

Officials of the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific announced their intention late last month to order eight embedded service routers sole-source from X-ES. The amount of the upcoming order has yet to be negotiated.

X-ES will provide SPAWAR with eight embedded systems based on the company's Xchange3000 3U VPX XMC/PMC carrier card able to support a single-width XMC or processor module for integration into VPX backplanes.

The Xchange3000 carrier card will have the X-ES XPedite5205 XMC/PMC embedded services router (ESR). the router runs Cisco IOS software with Cisco mobile ready net capabilities to provide secure data, voice, and video communications to stationary and mobile network nodes across wired and wireless links.

SPAWAR can use the Xchange3000 and XPedite5205 combination with UHF, VHF, Wi-Fi, or other radio platforms to create mobile ad-hoc networks that do not require a connection to central infrastructure for military communications.

X-ES also will provide SPAWAR with eight XIt1074 3U VPX rear transition modules with XIM/PIM carrier, which provides I/O expansion for 3U VPX single-board computers. It provides a XIM/PIM interface that supports I/O signal mapping to VPX for PMC and XMC mezzanine cards.

The XIt1074 modules each will have an X-ES XIt2045 PMC I/O module (PIM) with Gigabit Ethernet and serial networking. The XIt2045 routes I/O signals from the rear panel P14 connector of XMC and PMC module to out to external equipment. The XIt2045 breaks out 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet and RS-232 serial to RJ-45 and DB-9 connectors respectively.
