ASHBURN, Va. – The Curtiss-Wright Corp. Defense Solutions division in Ashburn, Va., is introducing a pre-integrated ruggedembedded computer to help lower costs, speed development, and reduce risks for deployed software-defined radio (SDR) and electronic warfare (EW) applications.

Curtiss-Wright’s SDR and EW base system combines GigaHertz sampling data rates and FPGA-based processing. The 3U OpenVPX-based mission processing architecture has four Curtiss-Wright VPX3-530 A/D and D/A converter transceiver modules, an XCLK1 clock synchronizer, and a 28-volt DC PSU3-THOR power supply.

It also provides a choice of VPX3-1257, VPX3-1258 or VPX3-1259 Intel-based single-board computer. The SDR/EW base system supports high-capacity removable storage via a rugged removable memory cartridge (RMC) that supports as much as two terabytes of SSD SATA memory.

The system delivers 16 analog 12-bit input channels of two gigasamples per second, and eight 14-bit output channels of more than 2.8 gigasamples per second for interfacing to the customer-supplied tuner.

Weighing about 20 pounds, the SDR/EW system comes in an MPMC-9354 rugged mission computer chassis with embedded thermal management system that cools as much as 485 Watts of power at 71 degrees Celsius at sea level via forced convection cooling.

The system is qualified to MIL-STD-704F, MIL-STD-810, and MIL-STD-461, and enables designers to select their RF tuners and software applications.

Curtiss-Wright will introduce other rugged embedded computing systems for additional application-specific solutions at a later date. Through the use of integrated and tested COTS modules, these base systems are architected, pre-qualified, and pre-verified to address the needs of SDR, EW, and other specific mission requirements.

By providing a pre-configured base solution, these systems can deliver a significant head start to reduce the integrator’s development cycle and costs.

Using one of Curtiss-Wright’s pre-integrated hardware solution sets as a starting point, a system integrator can customize the base system with application-specific software and expand the base system with additional components.
