Aircraft specialists at the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence needed new long-range high-frequency radios for the Royal Air Force`s fleet of Boeing Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft. They chose the the AN/ARC-22XX triple-fit radios from Rockwell Collins Government Systems division in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The new HF radios will improve communications for the British AWACS by including automatic link establishment, and an embedded multi-mode modem with new waveforms. Rockwell Collins engineers will develop frequency management/ conflict software to reduce the number of tasks that radio operators must perform.
The contract requires Collins to replace existing HF radios in seven RAF E-3D AWACS. The new radios have digital signal processing HF radios that can operate simultaneously. Each aircraft will receive a system comprising three 400-watt HF radio transceivers controlled over a MIL-STD-1553 serial data bus. — J.K.
