Savi Technology Inc. in Sunnyvale, Calif., is releasing a compact radio frequency identification (RFID) device for the military called the Portable Deployment Kit (PDK). The solution-in-a-case enables military logisticians to use RFID technology to track critical supplies in near real time, and into the “last tactical mile” of operations, Savi officials say. The U.S. Marine Corps Systems Command has placed an initial order for 100 units to be deployed in Southwest Asia. Savi Technology engineers worked with the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) for more than a year to design, develop, test and deploy the PDK, which went through rigorous testing in Kuwait and Iraq, company officials say. The PDK enables logisticians rapidly to locate, order, and transport supplies to the right area of operation at the right time without a fixed RFID infrastructure. It also provides satellite communications to the DOD’s in-transit visibility (ITV) RFID cargo-tracking network. In addition, PDK comes in a lightweight carrying case.
