NASA names Honeywell for deep-space test mission

NASA flight engineers needed data processing and control systems for a new mission. They found a solution with Honeywell Aerospace on Phoenix.

Designers at Honeywell will develop an on-board data processing system and controls for the New Millennium Program Space Technology 8 Mission (ST8), a space flight validation mission that will test technologies for future deep space missions. The craft is scheduled for launch in 2008.

Honeywell’s Environmentally Adaptive Fault Tolerant Computing (EAFTC) system integrates COTS components with real-time environmental sensors that monitor space radiation, fault tolerant control algorithms that ensure data integrity, and a radiation-hardened system infrastructure to provide an environmentally adaptable, high-performance on-board processing system.

Honeywell will also provide the flight experiment subsystem, a ground-control subsystem model and data analysis. Honeywell’s radiation-hardened and radiation-tolerant application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) produced with the company’s silicon-on-insulator fabrication method are designed to continue to perform after exposure to high doses of radiation.
