B-2 simulator will use Quantum3D images

Designers at Northrop Grumman needed an image generator for the B-2 flight simulator they were building for the U.S. Air Force.

They found a solution with Independence 2500 Image Generator (IG), from Quantum3D, San Jose, Calif. Northrop engineers will use the unit to provide integrated visual and radar channels in the Pilot Evaluation Simulator (PES) for the B-2 Stealth Bomber.

Pilots in the simulator will fly virtual missions over Quantum3D’s GeoScape Southwest USA WGS-84 COTS Database as well as a new sensor and visual training area extending from Tinker AFB, Okla., to Whiteman AFB, Mo.

The Independence 2500 Radar System Simulation is based on the COTS Radar Toolkit, from Camber Corp., Huntsville, Ala., which serves as the basis for more than 100 radar simulators in various training applications.

The radar simulation runs on an integrated hardware channel within the Independence 2500 IG using the NVIDIA QuadroFX Graphics Subsystem, equipped with Quantum3D’s patented nVSync precision synchronization technology, supporting a number of video formats typical of radar raster heads-down or multifunction displays.
