DHS employs GTS command and control system to boost border patrol efforts

October 1, 2006

Executives at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in Southeastern Arizona opted to bolster the border-security system with FusionCommand technology Global Technical Systems (GTS) of Virginia Beach, Va.

The GTS FusionCommand was developed under a DHS Science and Technology Directorates contract as part of its Border Security program office technology demonstration initiative known as Common Operational Picture/Data Fusion System.

FusionCommand is a command and control (C2) system that assists border-patrol personnel in identifying, tracking, and responding to border incidents. The solution sports commercial-off-the-shelf technologies in an open-architecture system.

Hardware and software technologies combine to provide users with real-time situational awareness of the operating area, with geographical-information-system (GIS) map and image overlays. FusionCommand works with the existing ground and camera sensor positions, as well as newly introduced ground surveillance radar.

The system’s C2 middleware and Sensor Fusion Engine process the sensor data to deliver a single, unambiguous track; border-agent position location; automated camera-on-target tracking; and messaging and data alerts to border agents in the field with GIS overlays of agent position and track information.
