Australian military deploys Mediaware for North West Shelf UAV trial

October 1, 2006

The Australian Department of Defence (ADF), in preparation of its North West Shelf unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) surveillance trials, sought a digital video-exploitation system.

ADF management awarded a contract to Mediaware, with offices in Australia and Washington, for its D-VEX digital video-exploitation system designed for the defense and broadcast sectors.

Mediaware’s D-VEX enabled the Department of Defence to capture, transmit, and interpret video intelligence from airborne intelligence, surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) assets.

The solution lends to immediate situational analysis from live video streams. ADF personnel used D-VEX to exploit video generated by the UAV supplied by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc., the aerial platform for the trial.

ADF personnel could remotely observe maritime surveillance operations in real time. They were able to access live and recorded video footage over the Defence intranet, create mosaic imagery on demand, and identify the location of the working aircraft and sensor using Mediaware’s Web portal and dissemination software.

The trials were led by the Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) in collaboration with the Australian navy, air force, army, and other defense agencies, as well as the Joint Offshore Protection Command. For more information, visit www.mediaware.com.au.
