The UGS antenna from Fractal Antenna Systems in Bedford, Mass., combines extreme wideband performance and superior gain in a low-profile lightweight design for use in challenging electronic warfare and signal intelligence applications. Integrating a single fractal antenna into an unattended ground sensor node, the UGS antenna can deploy to smaller than three feet tall, while providing a huge frequency range, company officials say. The UGS antenna features an innovative raised phase center design that minimizes ground losses, while improving radiation pattern and launch angle. Packaged or integrated into a radome that is 2.5 inches in diameter, the UGS antenna minimizes visual and RF detection, while providing superior performance. The UGS antenna is compatible with self-erecting mechanisms, and anticipates the need for deployment after emplacement by hand, airdrop, or canister launch. The antenna handles as much as 15 watts of input power, operates with a VSWR of less than 3:1, and has inherently 50-ohms impedance.
