The value of the worldwide shipments of electronic displays will reach $85 billion by 2005, and grow at an average annual growth rate (AAGR) of 10.6 percent to reach $141 billion by 2010, according to a market study from Business Communications Co. (BCC) Inc. in Norwalk, Conn.

Electronic displays include flat-panel and cathode-ray-tube (CRT) displays. CRTs account for slight more than 32 percent of the market in 2005, at $27.5 billion. The study is called RGB-328 Electronic Displays: Technologies, Products, Future Opportunities.

Through the forecast period these numbers will show a steady decline of 6.6 percent, to $19.5 billion in 2010. Flat panel displays accounted for 67 percent of the total value in 2005. They will see a considerable annual growth rate of 16.0 percent through the forecast period, jumping from $57.8 in 2005 to $121.5 billion in 2010, when they will account for 85 percent of the total display value in 2010, BCC analysts say.

CRT technology has been a standard of display technology for many years. As display technology becomes more progressive, these displays are gradually being replaced with models that are more compact and consume less power. As displays become more and more advanced there are fewer reasons to continue to invest in cathode ray tube (CRT) displays, analysts say.

Organic-light-emitting-diode displays (OLEDs) are a burgeoning display technology with shipments at close to $1 billion in 2004, and expected to grow by 22.3 percent each year to reach more than $3 billion by 2010.

Shipments of other display technologies, including inorganic-light-emitting-diode (LED) and vacuum-fluorescent displays (VFDs) are projected to grow in value at rates exceeding 4 percent through the 2010.
