Qantas automates data collection and transmission with Teledyne flight data recorders

July 1, 2006

Qantas Airways in Australia, having ordered 12 Airbus A380 with an option for 12 more, required an automated solution to handle the recording and transmission of flight data from the A380 aircraft.

The airline’s search for a system ended with its selection of the Wireless GroundLink quick access recorder (WQAR) from Teledyne Controls in Los Angeles, a business unit of Teledyne Technologies Inc.

Teledyne Controls’ patented WQAR system streamlines the data collection process by enabling the collection and wireless transfer of flight data from the aircraft to the ground, without requiring any human intervention. The raw data is compressed, encrypted, and delivered to Qantas Airways’ or Teledyne’s ground-based data center using cellular technology, the Internet, and a proprietary Teledyne protocol.

The WQAR, by replacing manual processes with automation, can speed data delivery times from days or weeks to minutes, as well as reduce costs and data loss. For more information, visit www.teledynecontrols.com.
